Septarian nodules form when sediment, primarily composed of mud and clay, accumulate around dead sea life or organic matter. Over tines, mineral, are deposited in the cracks, leading to the unique and distinctive patterns that resemble “dragon scales”
The name originates from the Latin world ‘septum’ referring to the cracks in the rocks
